back to things to do

Clamming is a activity many visitors and locals enjoy, but we can't guarantee you a successful experience. There are many sites where clamming is legal on both islands. Clamming is regulated by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Be sure to have all applicable licenses.

Here are some of the places you can try clamming on Whidbey Island:

Dave Mackie Park at the south end of Useless Bay. (you actually have better luck getting geoducs on this beach)

Possession Beach on the south eastern tip of Whidbey.

Freeland Park Beach at the foot of Holmes Harbor. (actually more cockles then clams here)

Double Bluff Beach Park. (if you can find a low enough tide in this deeper section of Useless Bay)

Ala Spit Beach Access. A popular spot for birdwatchers, located off Troxell Road north of Oak Harbor. Public beach access, clam digging.

Crabbing is popular on both islands. By boat and by dock, crab is plentiful during the season. Crabbing is also regulated by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Be sure to have all applicable licenses, which are available at hardware and major retailers on Whidbey and Camano. Need equipment? No problem. Most hardware and major retailers are stocked year-round.
